Winter Racing  at Belmont Park 21st August 2010

The emotions were running high at Belmont Park on Saturday when outstanding sprinter Idyllic Prince rewrote the record books with his third win in the Listed Goodwood Sprint.  Idyllic Prince another of the Scenic stock has been an unbelievable racehorse with earnings just shy of the million dollar mark and having raced exclusively in WA.  This war horse has been plagued by feet trouble and that has restricted him from being a Group 1 winner, but with the astuteness of trainer Jimmy Taylor the horse has been well managed and placed to the best of his abilities and is a family favourite at the stables of the Taylor's, having been on the property since he was a foal. Congratulations to all concerned! The racing on Saturday was first class and other locally bred winners included:

Sentenza (Mr Prosperous-Dashing Ego) 1600m bred by Mr N.T.Smith

Hawkeye Mort (Fighting Falcon-Nordanseuse) 2100m bred by Mr A.Mortimer

Winter Racing  at Belmont Park 14th August 2010

Winter racing continued at Belmont Park in what is genuinely been described as a mild winter at best, but the racing highlights have not disappointed.  With no feature on the program the racing was full of good competitive fields which produced close finishes for most of the day.  Of course it was Broome Cup day and many local racegoers headed up to the sunshine for what is becoming an  annual pilgrimage for many as the Broome Cup is now very much a social highlight on the WA calendar, congratulation to Glen Cortes and Andrew Masters on winning the cup with Dance on Board.  Other locally bred winners at Belmont Park included:

Winter Racing  at Belmont Park 19th June 2010

Another spectacular day weather wise and a great program to boot.  Guineas day for our three year olds and the field assembled was extremely even and generally when this happen a bookies result often occurs.  Mighty Rossa a maiden going into the event surprisingly went straight to the lead and was never headed from the Bob Peters owned filly Tranquility.  The other feature on the day was the Winter Championship Final and it was taken out by the ever consistent money spinner in Hide the Loot.  Winter Racing  at Belmont Park 12th June 2010

The sun was still shining again on Belmont Park for the running of the Group 3 Belmont Sprint.  The race was taken out by the horse that loves Belmont Park with only one defeat under his belt in, Grand Nirvana.  The Scenic gelding has been a shining light this preparation and Fred Kersley will now be hoping he can take his winter form to Ascot for the Summer Carnival as he has shown that he has the ability to take it to the next level. Once again it was not easy to find the winners, but for locally bred horses the day was a triumph, those winners included:

Winter Racing  at Belmont Park 5th June 2010

There doesn't appear to be any winter at the moment, but Belmont Park was covered in sunshine for another competitive day of racing.  With no feature event this weekend racegoers were faced with 8 strong fields to try and find a winner, and that hasn't been a easy task at Belmont so far this season.  The most impressive win of the day came in the two year old event with the Pearl of Love filly Sweet Serenity getting out of her ground and then only just getting her head down on the line, she has all the makings of a lovely filly , and again what a disappoint to WA breeding with the only crop of the Pearl of Loves showing so much aability. Other locally bred winners on the day included:

Hawkeye Mort (Fighting Falcon-Nordanseuse) 2100, bred by Mr A.H.Mortimer

 D'ORSOGNA ROMA CUP - GROUP 3  -  Belmont Park 29TH May 2010

Italian Day at Belmont Park is definitely the highlight event for the Winter Season  and this meeting didn't let anyone down.  Spectacular weather with equally spectacular racing and the feature event was all about the Jimmy Taylor team, three out of the first five placing's were filled by this stable in what was a remarkable achievement for WA's most consistent winning stable. Vain Raider the horse that has only been unplaced once in 20 starts took out the event over the race favourite Idyllic Prince who followed his every move but just couldn't bridge the gap on the high balling speedster. Other locally bred winners on the day included:

Keshaar (Xaar-Keshet) 1600m bred by Oakland Park Stud

Winter Racing  at Belmont Park 22nd May 2010

A wet and wintry day at Belmont Park but that didn't stop a great competitive day of racing.  With the feature of the day being the Sky Racing Provincial Championship Final, taken out by the consistent Ten Aces that obviously likes the sting out of the ground as he grew another leg down the outside of the track to win impressively. Other locally bred winners on the day included:

Hot Tamale (Oratorio-Fimmel Fox) 1000M bred by Mungrup Stud

Striken (Kenvain-Strike the Wind) 1400m bred by Mr and Mrs L/S Piper

Winter Racing  at Belmont Park 15th May 2010 - H G BOLTON SPRINT

Belmont Park was covered in sunshine and the crowd was out to witness a fantastic day of racing.  The day provided WA Breeders with a bonanza as every winner on the program was WA Bred, congratulations breeders !  Winter Racing  at Belmont Park 8th May 2010

A small card for the second Saturday meeting of the new winter season, obviously the weather being so beautiful it is not actually feeling like Winter is approaching, maybe the trainers are thinking the same thing! I'm sure over the next couple of weeks, beginning with the Bolton Sprint that fields will start to pick up.  The meeting did produce a lot of good winners and was some compensation for an unlucky run in the Derby for God has Spoken, with an easy kill over 2000m, a very deserved win for connections.  Other locally bred winners on the program included:

God has Spoken (Blackfriars-Dolly Will Do) bred by Durham Lodge Thoroughbreds 2000m

Our Ol' Fella (Halo Homewrecker-Home Alabama) bred by Ms E.Giles 1200m

Winter Racing  at Belmont Park 1st May 2010

Welcome back to Belmont Park the winter head quarters for Perth Racing.  The feature of the day was the Group 3 WA Sires Produce

and what a finish it was.  The race continued what has been an epic battle between two outstanding fillies in Motion Pictures and Miss Condition and once again in the space of a fortnight the luck was with Motion Pictures and took her outstanding season earnings to $600,000 plus.  It goes to show what having a good two year old can do and what a summer it will be with more clashes likely to happen between these two star fillies.  Fillies prevailed in the event with the first three placegetters being of the fairer sex. The other feature was the Diggers Cup and it was taken out by Pencaza.

Racing at Ascot was featured by the J C Roberts Stakes run over 1800m and a traditional lead up to the WATC Derby that is fast approaching.  The race was taken out by the exciting Neville Parnham trained galloper in Bridgestone, giving Neville the quinella with God Has Spoken running second and the outstanding filly For Your Eyes Only running a courageous third.  Saturday also saw the first running of the Roy Edwards Memorial for two year olds. Roy along with his wife Maureen have been  long standing members of the West Australian Bloodhorse Breeders Association and we were all saddened by the news of his passing and send our condolences to the whole of the Edwards Family. What an exciting week Perth Racing had with the Bunbury Carnival being a huge success with the gallant little mare Mekong Miss taking out the Bunbury Stakes and Whipsaw a relative newcomer to the staying ranks stepping up from a maiden win to take out the feature in the Bunbury Cup.  Congratulations to all and also the Bunbury Turf Club for what was an outstanding week of racing.

Saturday racing at Ascot produced some extremely competitive racing with some of the fields not being overly big but the closeness of finishes made for a great spectacle.  The feature of the day was the TJ Smith Trophy over 1600m and it was taken out by the appropriately named Yabigorse from the favourite Morant and the fast finishing Ranger for third.  Other locally bred winner son the day were:

The good horses are back and Saturday's meeting was just a taste of things to come.  Oratorio had a day out with the brilliant Motion Pictures winning her third straight race with ease and it is very difficult in seeing anything at this stage toppling her in the feature two year old races in the near future.  The Group 3 Champion Fillies Stakes was one by the gallant little filly in Le Plunge who lead from start to finish it what was a gutsy effort. Congratulations to Robert and Anne Anderson who bred the filly and now race her, a nice bit of black type for their breeding stock.

Other locally bred winners on the program included:

Motion Pictures (Oratorio-Zabore Loch) 1000m bred by G.Hammarquist

On the Carpet (Euclase-Saviour) 1200m bred by Namerik Thoroughbreds

  Pinjarra Cup 2010

The 2010 Pinjarra Cup was taken out by the gallant little mare in Simply Adorable.  This little mare always figures in the placing's and tries her hardest and this was her biggest feat to date when tactically ridden by Danny Miller she was able to round up the field before the home turn and convincingly win from the race favourite in Almohaad.

Simply Adorable (Blackfriars-Fortunate Sally) bred by Durham Lodge Thoroughbred Stud

  Perth Racing - Ascot 27th February 2010

A great day of racing even though the temperature was reaching the high 30's.  The Challenge Stakes was the feature and it was taken out by the enigmatic galloper Morant who finally put it altogether in a race and showed what everyone knew he was capable of doing.  The race produced some outstanding performances from a Derby point of view and collectively this could be the States best group of three year olds produced for a long time, the next couple of races leading up to the Derby will I'm sure produce a different winner every time because there is just so much talent and the racing will be scintillating so make sure your out at the track to witness out next stars of the track.  Other locally bred winners on the day included:

The last race of the day had everyone in awe as the bonny filly For Your Eyes Only came with a scintillating burst of speed down the outside to capture her third win in a row with a lot more in store for her and her connections over the coming season. The racing is starting to hot up with Autumn Carnival horses now beginning there early steps in what will be a fantastic time of feature races in the coming month and a half.  The Bunbury Carnival and the Pinjarra Cup will also provide great South West Feature events in the next couple of weeks.

  Perth Racing - Ascot 13th February 2010

The main focus of the weekend racing was at Bunbury on Sunday with the running of the AHA Cup, a traditional lead up race to the Pinjarra and Bunbury Cups.  The race was subsequently taken out by the up and coming stayer and odds on favourite Almohad, just getting the nod over what was nearly an upset result caused by the outsider Saratime.  The racing at Ascot did not have a feature race, but the excitement was seeing the return of the More than Ready gelding in Sir Hallowell, and this race did not disappoint with a huge run being put in by this highly promising young horse that may head to Sydney after his next assignment in the Challenge Stakes.  Other locally bred winner son the program included:

Perth Racing - Ascot 6th February 2010 - Cyril Flower Stakes Day

After the excitement of last weeks Magic Millions Race Day and a week of Yearling Sales, last Saturdays meeting was a low key affair that still produced some outstanding winning performances.  The Cyril Flower Stakes was taken out by the consistent Hurricane Sky gelding in Habadeclorka giving this underrated stallion another Stakes winner. With most people expecting the racing to quieten down for a few weeks, that certainly didn't happen on Saturday with some sensational racing even though a feature event wasn't on the program.  Taunton Vale Stud had a exciting day leading up to the Perth Magic Million Sales with their freshman stallion Bearcat landing both winners of the two year old events with the lovely filly Time to Climb blitzing her rivals and the equally impressive first starter Kiddy Cat.   Perth Racing - Ascot 9th January 2010

The aftermath of the Carnival took its toll on numbers at Perth Racing head quarters but the racing was competitive and produced a few surprises along the way for punters. The upset of the day being the sprint with the hot pot Ma Ma Machine who had blitzed rivals a week earlier in the Summer Scorcher upstaged by the General Nediym war horse in Electric General.  The day did produce quite a few locally bred winners including:

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL MEMBERS OF THE WESTERN AUSTRALIAN BLOODHORSE BREEDERS

Perth Racing welcomed in a new decade with a bang, over 23,000 people witnessed the running of the 2010 Perth Cup with Adam Durrant training the quinella.  Lord's Ransom a Jeune gelding out of Palace Alice and owned by the successful Bob Peters won the 2400m race from the stable mate the little grey mare in Ma Chienne who tried gallantly to overhaul the big chestnut to fail by a short head.  The race was run at a slow tempo, but the end result was a blanket finish from first to 10th with a few hard luck tales behind the placegetters. The whole program was a success for WA Breeders with Trade Fair siring his first 2 year old winner for the season in the impressive Absolute Pleasure, bred by Vinmar Nominess out of the good producing mare in Magic Puff.  Trade Fair has once again stood this season at Evergreen Lodge and they would be delighted to get such an early winner from this shuttle stallion. The summer scorcher was also taken out by the Adam Durrant trained Ma Ma Machine.

I'm Here To Win (Numerous Times-Tribal Conquest) 1000m bred by Taunton Vale Stud

  Perth Racing - Ascot 26th December 2009

A low key meeting was held at Ascot on Saturday, but the racing did not disappoint with the running of the final lead up to the Perth Cup being the ATA Handicap and the final black type race for the fillies and mares with the La Trice Quality.  The ATA Handicap was won by the old Spice gelding New Spice breaking a long run of outs, but showing that he still has some wins left in him.  The La Trice Classic was won by the up and coming staying mare in Impressive Jeunay and she looks the real deal for the Oaks and Derby next year.

Other winners on the program included:

At last WA connections finally tasted some spoils of the carnival after the Victorian and NSW raiders had claimed our two big Group 1's. The Adam Durrant trained Proart added some value to his impressive pedigree with a fantastic win in the Group 3 A.J.Scahill Stakes, being by outstanding stallion Rock of Gibraltar out of the super race mare Beaux Art. Congratulations to Yarradale Stud and Heritage for his magnificant two year old winner in Flying Heritage.  Heritage of course is the half brother to the great champion Northerly by Flying Spur and judging by the look and the way Flying Heritage won it won't be taking people long to take notice of the outstanding pedigree of Heritage.  Congratulations to all!

  Perth Racing - Ascot 5th December 2009

The last of the Group 1's but the Carnival of Summer racing rolls on.  The Kingston Town Classic was just that, a classic race to watch, but unfortunately for WA the prize was taken away by our Eastern States counterparts for the second year running.  Snipers Bullet made amends for last years luckless trip by taking away now two Group 1's in a fortnight after not winning a race for over two years, and it was a great training performance by Tracey Bartley and was expertly ridden by Damien Oliver.  Three year old Blackfriars gelding God Has Spoken was gallant in defeat as was the tough Scenic Shot who was definately looking for further after his staying campaign in Melbourne. The other features of the day included the Queens Cup that was taken out by Gondorff and the Sir ERnest Lee Steere Classic that was won by Dino Mak.

Other locally bred winners on the program included:

Flying Heritage (Heritage-Czaba) 1000m bred by Yarradale Stud

Kender (Kenvain-Tender Smile) 1200m bred by Mungrup Stud and Mr & Mrs L.Piper

More exciting racing at Ascot is to come with the Christmas period fast approaching and the Perth Cup less than a month away, let's hope everyone is gearing up for a sensational period of top class racing in Perth.

  Perth Racing - Ascot 28/11/2009

The Carnival continued on with the running of the $500,000 Winterbottom Stakes, the premier sprinting race in Western Australia and a race that should definitely be looking  at an upgrade to Group 1 status with the quality of Sprinters it is now attracting.  The race was taken out by the well performed Victorian mare Ortensia with her Bernborough like finish to get over the top of the tough performer Idyllic Prince and the consistent mare Black in Time.  The other feature races on the program were the Listed Aquanita Stakes taken out by the Blackfriars gelding God has Spoken and the Jungle Dawn Classic that was won by the beautifully bred Broadway Belle.

Other locally bred winners on the program included:

Trustee Brown (Oratorio-Highway Belle) 1400m bred by Mungrup Stud and Mr & Mrs L.Piper

  Perth Racing - Ascot 21/11/2009

The First day of the Ascot Summer Carnival featuring the Group 1 Railway Stakes and what a race it was.  Packed with Eastern States invaders including the Emirates Group 1 winner All American and the unlucky placegetters in Gold Salute and Snipers Bullet, this race was always going to produce something special and it lived up to all the hype.  The race was taken out by last years unlucky runner in Snipers Bullet (Bite the Bullet-Yallah Terrace), this horse has been placed consistently at Group1 level but had not won a race for two years and the pressure was on NSW trainer Tracy Bartley to get this horse over the line, and at the top of the Ascot straight jockey Nash Rawiller let his charge down and away he went to score a convincing win from the ultra consistent Tarzi and the unlucky Color Correct.  Other big race winners on the day included the Placid Ark Stakes winner Kid Choisir ridden by Damien Oliver and the Tattersall's Cup winner Ma Chienne giving trainer Adam Durrant and young jockey Alan Kennedy their 3rd winner for the afternoon.

Locally bred winners on the program were also to the fore including:

Margaret Street ( Ihtiram-Good Heavans) 1200m bred by Oakland Park Stud and Mr M.Edwardes.  A half relation by Bletchley Park will be offered for sale at next years Perth Magic Millions by Oakland Park Stud

Pete the Profiler (Fimiston-Thelma of Tudor) 1400m bred by Mr S.Palmer

Casanova Jack (Jacamar-Girl Trouble) 1200m bred by Ms J.Summerhayes

Inarticulate (Enforcer-Don't Speak) 1400m bred by Mr R.Waddell

Ma Chienne (Verglas-Just Act) 2200m bred by Mr J.Andrew

And now for the most anticipated sprinting race in Western Australia, the Group 2 Winterbottom Stakes featuring Melbourne galloper Lucky Secret, 3 year old sensation Waratah's Secret, Idyllic Prince and many more.  Let the stars roll out next Saturday.

  Perth Racing - Ascot 14/11/2009

A cracking meeting was held at Ascot on Saturday with three feature races leading into next Saturday's Million Dollar Group 1 Railway Stakes.  The three feature races produced some upset results including the Group 3 Colonel Reeves being won by one of the outsiders in Revolition upsetting the short priced favourite Hay List.  The WA Guineas was taken out by the tough filly Clueless Angel and the RJ Peters by the ever consistent Elliotto, a horse that has taken the next step this preparation. All in all these were classic races that once again show cased West Australian breeding with the likes of WA stalwart stallion Key Business and the new kid on the block Oratorio producing feature winners.

Other locally bred winners on the program included:

Trustee Brown (Oratorio-Highway Bliss) 1100m bred by Mungrup Stud and Mr & Mrs L.Piper

SCENIC SHOT SHOOTS TO STARDOM IN THE GROUP 1 MACKINNON STAKES

Scenic Shot finally delivered the knock out blow for his Group 1 maiden win in Melbourne.  After producing a game run in the Cox Stakes the week before Scenic Shot showed his toughness with a brilliant two length win in the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes and took his earnings to over the two million dollar mark.  A great money making machine after being bought for $36,000 at the Perth Magic Millions Premier Yearling Sale by Danny Morton.  Scenic Shot is out of Sweepshot, a Dr Grace mare that has also produced last Saturdays winner in Flight Path.  Scenic Shot was bred by Robert and Ann Anderson of Anita Vale Stud who have also been long term clients of Len and Danny Morton, congratulations to all concerned.

  Perth Racing - Ascot 24/10/2009

Cox Plate Day at Ascot Racecourse with the main race of the day being the Group 3 Prince of Wales Stakes.  Once again the race provided us with the highs and lows of racing with the evergreen sprinter Idyllic Prince winning his second Prince of Wales Stakes and taking his earnings to over the $600,000 mark.  The race was marred by the tragic death of outstanding sprinter Dark Target who unfortunately collapsed after the event from a suspected heart attack.  Our condolences go out to Christine Stelmach and family for the loss.  The meeting was extremely competitive with many locally bred horses taking the honours, amongst the winners were:

Motion Pictures (Oratorio-Zabore Loch) bred by Mr D.R.Hammarquist - 1000m
